CineVegas Invades Sin City
June is always one of my favorite months in Las Vegas because it means the return of CineVegas. A culmination of cinema from around the world, this annual film festival showcases an array of independent films, short films and documentaries. A few nights ago the 10th Annual CineVegas Film Festival kicked off with a special screening of Peter Cattaneo's film, "The Rocker," which stars Rainn Wilson (best known as Dwight from The Office) as washed-out 80's drummer. I got tickets to this special screening and I have to say that the movie was hilarious. Not to give anything away, it's about the drummer of an 80's hair band (Wilson) who gets kicked out of his group, then twenty years later joins his nephews high school band. Wilson's comedic timing and sense of humor made me laugh the entire time I was watching, and the story was definitely entertaining. Another thing that made this an interesting experience was that it was the first movie premiere that I've attended where I was watching it with the stars of the film. Emma Stone (who was also in Superbad) and SNL's Fred Armisen were only a few seats away from me, which makes me wonder - what does it feel like to watch yourself in a movie?…
Well anyway the festival goes on till Saturday, so if you have a craving to get out of the Las Vegas heat and try something a little out of the norm, I strongly recommend CineVegas. I've only seen one film so far this year, but no matter what kind of movies you're into there is truly something for everyone who attends. Packed with celebrities and a multitude of good films that you normally wouldn't have an opportunity to see, there is no wonder that this is one fastest growing film festivals in the world.
Who knows, maybe I'll see you there.
